GrayHaze is a live streaming service built on top of ATProto, an open-source protocol for building decentralized social applications. ATProto defines how to identify a user, where to store user data, and how to move data around. User data is stored in a Personal Data Store (PDS), which is typically owned by BlueSky PBLLC. However, with some technical knowledge, you can transfer your data elsewhere or even self-host it.

GrayHaze applies the ATProto protocol to live streaming. During a live stream, video segments are uploaded to your PDS and served to other users. Similarly, chat messages and other data produced while using the platform are stored on your PDS. The only exception is the authentication token used to log in and perform necessary PDS operations like sending chat messages.

How to Sign Up: The easiest way to sign up is through BlueSky. You will receive a handle that you can use to log in to GrayHaze. While there are other methods, such as hosting your own PDS or finding a PDS with open registrations, they are typically more complicated and not necessary for casual users.
